Crystal Antlers “Two Way Mirror”

Two-Way Mirror

If the above artwork looks a little familiar, you’re probably already aquainted with bands like Black Flag, the Minutemen and Sonic Youth, all of whom have had covers drawn by Raymond Pettibon. The legendary artist’s illustration for Crystal Antlers’ Two Way Mirror – out now on their own Recreation LTD imprint – provides a subtle link to these Long Beach noiseniks’ punk and hardcore roots (it’s also worth noting their 2009 debut LP Tentacles was the last new album released on the sadly defunct Touch & Go label), but here the group stand poised to snatch away the sun-damaged prog-psych crown long held by fellow travellers Comets On Fire. In between unleashing waves of blistering guitar squall, the band weave together elements of Beefheart-esque out-rock, surf music, folk and even sax-skronking avant-jazz, all the while displaying finely-tuned technical chops and an ear for melody impressive enough to make Les Savy Fav jealous.  Take a listen to the title track below, and get aquainted with this excellent album ASAP.

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz. Follow me on Twitter @FoamHandsBlog to receive notifications of new posts and the occasional random brain-fart, and please share links wherever you can. Enjoy!
