Ufomammut : Oro Opus Primum

Earlier this week I reviewed an album by a band breaking free of the “doom metal” pigeonhole; here is a group clearly in thrall to the genre, but blowing its boundaries and preconceived stereotypes wide open. Italian duo Ufomammut‘s sixth album Oro Opus Primum is an immense, sprawling suite of creeping atmospherics, instrumental space rock and heavy-as-hell riffage. It needs to be heard in full to really appreciate the complexity of the composition – recurring motifs, build-up and release of tension etc – which is why the whole album is available to preview below, courtesy of Supernatural Cat, who have just released it in conjunction with Neurot Recordings. Oh, and Opus Primum is only the first chapter of the Oro story; the second half – Opus Alter – is due out in September.

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz.
