Antibalas : Dirty Money

The fact that the world’s best-known contemporary Afrobeat band are, in fact, based in Brooklyn might raise a few eyebrows amongst moral high-horse riders, but there’s no denying their absolute commitment to the cause: over the past fifteen years, the ever-evolving Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra have played with the legendary Fela Kuti’s son Femi and long-time drummer Tony Allen, and in 2007 arranged and performed the score for the hit off-Broadway musical (Fela!) based on his inspiring life story. The group’s eponymous fifth album (out August 7) is their first for Daptone Records, the label run by guitarist/ producer (and Dap-King) Gabriel Roth, and is their finest to date; listen to opener “Dirty Money” below.

About foamhands

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz. Follow me on Twitter @FoamHandsBlog to receive notifications of new posts and the occasional random brain-fart, and please share links wherever you can. Enjoy!
