Pop roundup : Sky Ferreira, Icona Pop, Solange

Yesterday’s dose of bedroom-boogie brilliance from Jessie Ware (and seeing the frankly awesome Taylor Swift on TV) got me thinking: there’s a ton of great pure pop out there at the minute that I’ve never even considered covering. So here are three songs that you’ll either have heard or will soon be hearing all over the radio…

First up is Sky Ferriera, a model/ actress-cum-singer/ songwriter whose forthcoming Ghost EP (Capitol) features guest appearances, production and co-writes from Cass McCombs, Jon Brion, Dev Hynes, Ariel Rechtshaid and Garbage’s Shirley Manson. From that release, here’s the video for “Everything Is Embarrassing”:

Next, Swedish duo Icona Pop have a new EP, their first for Atlantic subsidiary Big Beat, coming soon; titled Iconic, it will feature their platinum-selling (in Sweden) single “I Love It” alongside new tracks including the club-tooled “Ready For The Weekend”.

Lastly, Beyonce’s little sister Solange has long been an out-and-proud indie-rock fan, working with Of Montreal and hanging out at Grizzly Bear shows. Her new single “Losing You” pushes further into that territory; like the Ferreira song above, the track was co-written by Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) and will be released on Terrible Records, the label run by GB’s Chris Taylor.

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz.
