Daphni : Jiaolong

Like his friend and sometime collaborator Kieran “Four Tet” Hebden, Canadian producer Dan Snaith has recently started pushing his music further towards the middle of the dancefloor. After a decade cooking up jazz- and folk-tinted electronic psychedelia, firstly as Manitoba and later as Caribou, he has just released his first full-length under his latest alias – Daphni – on his own label Jiaolong, which also happens to be the album’s title. As with Hebden’s recent club-tooled Pink LP, Jiaolong features several tracks previously released on vinyl, but unlike that record’s slowly-unfurling epics, here Snaith goes straight for the jugular with opener “Yes I Know” (below) and doesn’t let go; it’s a collection of sample-heavy deep house bangers that are just as robust and infectious in an album setting as in the midst of a DJ set. It’s out now via Jiaolong/ Merge Records.

About foamhands

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz. Follow me on Twitter @FoamHandsBlog to receive notifications of new posts and the occasional random brain-fart, and please share links wherever you can. Enjoy!
