James Ferraro : Sushi

James Ferraro to release Rainstick Fizz Plus (or Shoop2DaDoop) Sushi in November via Hippos in Tanks

Formerly NY, now LA- based synth/guitarist James Ferraro has been producing epic – albeit lo-fi – ’80s- and ’90s-inspired jams for a few years now, but only became known to the wider world more recently: his MIDI symphonies have of late elbowed their way to the forefront of the “hypnogogic pop” scene, with The Wire magazine naming last year’s retro-futurist consumerism concept piece Far Side Virtual their Album of 2011. Following a couple of mixtapes from his Bebetune$ and Bodyguard side-projects, Ferraro has just released his new long-player Sushi digitally (a physical version will follow in December) via Hippos In Tanks, and it’s a doozy; sounding much more polished than its predecessor, its chopped & screwed vocal samples and leftfield electronica make for a consistently surprising – and thoroughly modern – listen. Check it out below.

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz. Follow me on Twitter @FoamHandsBlog to receive notifications of new posts and the occasional random brain-fart, and please share links wherever you can. Enjoy!
