Boats: A Fairway Full Of Miners

Track artwork

Winnipeg quintet Boats will release their third album A Fairway Full Of Miners on February 5 via Kill Rock Stars and if you like your pop fizzy, chances are you’ll find it about as addictive as sugar-coated crack rocks. Referencing dozens of your indie-rock favourites, Fairway takes in winsome Shins-esque pop, ragged Pixies rock, the jerky new-wave of Les Savy Fav and Vampire Weekend’s rhythmic push-and-pull, all decorated with trumpet and lo-fi electro flourishes and vocals delivered in the manner of a helium-huffing pirate. With lyrics about death and glowing bears trying to wrestle attention away from the dizzying hooks, it’s messy but not unfocused, and – most importantly – a whole lot of fun. Listen to “Great Skulls” below.

About foamhands

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz. Follow me on Twitter @FoamHandsBlog to receive notifications of new posts and the occasional random brain-fart, and please share links wherever you can. Enjoy!
