Track of the day: Ellery James Roberts : Kerou’s Lament

Who? Ellery James Roberts, ex-frontman of hotly-tipped but short-lived post-everything collective WU LYF
Where? Manchester, England
What? Roberts’ first foray into solo territory, the self-released “Kerou’s Lament”
Why? Because it takes a personal message (“To the powers of old, to the powers that be/ You fucked up this world, but you won’t fuck with me”) and turns it into a triumphant terrace-style anthem that combines the sass of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” with the grizzled bluster of Springsteen’s “Born To Run”. Also, even though Roberts effectively killed WU LYF, this song suggests that the same confrontational fire still burns deep down in his soul. Also, it has a pretty cool video.

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz.
