Track of the day : No Regular Play : Nothing Less

Who? NYC production duo Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn, AKA No Regular Play

What? The title track from their new EP Nothing Else, out August 26 via HAKT Recordings

Why? Smooth and soulful, crisp and funky, “Nothing Else” weaves elements personal to DeBruyn and Paulus into something universal. Friends since childhood, the pair previously travelled together to Cuba to immerse themselves in Latin dance music, whilst the latter formally studied jazz and was once a touring member of Balkan-influenced indie-pop group Beirut, and you can hear all of the above in the track’s skipping house rhythms, interlocking horns and – in its last quarter – borderline plaintive vocals. At once joyful and wistful, carefree and reflective, it’s evocative of those bittersweet moments at the end of a great holiday, when you’re fully aware that you’re living a future happy memory; listen below.

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz.
