Mt. Royal

.
Introducing: Mt. Royal
.
Who? Katrina Ford (vocals), Woody Ranere (guitar), Michael Lowry (drums), Ed Harris (bass) and Matt Pierce (keyboards/ woodwinds)
.
Where? Baltimore, Maryland
.
What? The group’s self-titled EP/ mini-album (six songs in half an hour, so take your pick), out January 27 via Bella Union
.
Why? In a past life the four guys in Mt. Royal played together in electro-rock jam band Lake Trout, and between them have stints with Big In Japan and trip hop juggernauts UNKLE under their belts; Ford, meanwhile, fronted TV On The Radio-affiliated 4AD trio Celebration. Mt. Royal combines the latter’s soulfully psychedelic swirl with cinematic synths and earthy beat-pop, resulting in a surprisingly varied sprawl of driving rhythms, epic prog-inspired arrangements and vocals that alternately soar and snarl. If you’ve ever wondered what Beach House would sound like if they hired a full band and did a bunch of uppers, here’s your answer; check out opener “Missing Reward” below.

About foamhands

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz. Follow me on Twitter @FoamHandsBlog to receive notifications of new posts and the occasional random brain-fart, and please share links wherever you can. Enjoy!
