Albums of 2014: Part One

Okay, so I know it’s a little early but, hey, no harm in being organised, right? Besides, NME published their year-end list last week, so at least I had the decency to wait until December to follow suit! Here’s what’s happening: following today’s long-list, I will be unveiling my top 14 long-playing records of 2014 one day at a time, with the album at number one to be revealed on Friday December 19. Exciting? You betcha! Now all I have to do is keep my fingers crossed that Kendrick Lamar doesn’t follow up on his threats to pull a Beyonce and sneak his new album out before January 1st, because that would really throw a spanner in the works!

So, yeah… Great year for music, so many brilliant albums, yadda yaddah blah blah. The message is the same as ever: no matter what the pessimists and naysayers would have you believe, you only have to look at the list below to see that music itself (if not the industry built around it) is still in rude health. As always, it was a struggle narrowing down the 300+ albums I’ve heard and enjoyed this year to a list of 100, and although they didn’t make the final cut I would strongly recommend checking out the 2014 releases from the following if you get chance:
Actress, Alvvays, Archibald Slim, Artificial Brain, A$AP Ferg, Avi Buffalo, Bitchin’ Bajas, Brandon Seabrook, Bremen, Castanets, CEO, Clark, Copeland, Dan Bodan, DJ Quik, Donovan Blanc, Dream Police, Each Other, Ekoplekz, Electric Wizard, EMA, Eno/ Hyde, Eyehategod, Father, Fire Orchestra, Gardens & Villa, Goat, Gobby, Gold Bears, Grumbling Fur, Hashman Deejay, Hieroglyphic Being, Hungry Cloud Darkening, Indian, JJ, Kevin Gates, Kindness, Kink, Last Ex, Lee Bannon, Literature, Makthaverskan, Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler, Megafortress, The Men, Mitski, Mourn, Naomi Punk, NehruvianDOOM, Nicholas Krgovich, Objekt, Old Man Gloom, OOIOO, Oozing Wound, Owen Pallet, Owls, Popcaan, Popstrangers, Protect-U, Pure X, Raspberry Bulbs, Ratking, Rich Gang, Rick Ross, Rustie, Sculpture, SD Laika, Shit Robot, Steve Gunn, Suicideyear, Thou, Tinashe, Todd Terje, Tombs, Tonstartssbandht, Trash Talk, Turn To Crime, The Ukiah Drag, United Nations, Untold, Vanessa Amara, Vanhelgd, Vince Staples, We Are Shining, Withered Hand, Woods, Wovenhand, Wussy, Wye Oak, Young Fathers & Young Widows

About foamhands

My name is Michael Dix; I'm a decade or so past being down with the kids, but to me new music never gets old. Apparently I like music that sounds like faulty kitchen appliances and ritual slaughter; really I just like what I like, whether that happens to be indie, pop, punk, hip hop, metal, electronica, Afrobeat or jazz. Follow me on Twitter @FoamHandsBlog to receive notifications of new posts and the occasional random brain-fart, and please share links wherever you can. Enjoy!
